WINDOW SAMPLING DRILLING

This is often referred to as the mini rig and is often the preferred method for many of our clients who have come to rely on the quality of service and the equipment provided by our windowless sampling machines. On some sites access is too restricted for cable percussion drilling whereas the mini rig is a compact self-contained rig which can be manoeuvred under its own power into locations with difficult access. The rig can also be used on gently sloping sites which may not accessible by the cable percussion rig.

The Dando Terriers & Premier 110’s are small track-mounted soil sampling rigs designed to carry out rapid, relatively shallow ground investigations for geotechnical and geo-environmental assessments.

In the right conditions the Terrier/Premier is capable of the following:-

  • Forming boreholes up to 10 metres in depth

  • Dynamic sampling of soils to obtain near-undisturbed continuous samples which are retained in plastic liners

  • Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) in general accordance with BS1377

  • Installing standpipes, monitoring wells and various other instruments

  • Forming boreholes for a variety of ground remediation techniques

  • Dynamic probing in accordance with BS1377

  • Concrete coring

The Terrier or Premier are easily mobilised to site. They are contained on/in a trailer and towed by a four-wheel drive vehicle or inside a van containing all ancillary equipment and materials, allowing a rapid and inexpensive mobilisation to site. The rig can fit through a standard doorway allowing drilling to be undertaken inside buildings.

Drilling and sampling to depths of 5 to 10 metres is achievable depending on ground conditions. Disturbed samples are taken from the borehole and logged by an experienced Geo-environmental Engineer (provided by our client). Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) and borehole permeability testing can be undertaken within the mini boreholes. On completion, gas and ground water monitoring pipes are often installed in the borehole to allow later measurements to be taken by our clients. Borehole log sheets can be emailed or posted to clients within a couple of days of the drilling works being carried out or the following day if the job is local.

Concrete Coring:
The window sampling rig can also be equipped with a concrete corer unit, allowing samples of surface concrete 150mm in diameter and up to 300mm thick to be recovered for testing. This method also allows the surface to be reinstated to a neat finish and is often used to enable long-term monitoring points to be installed in heavily trafficked locations such as petrol filling station forecourts.
